Us web freelancers have all been there, tough deadlines to meet, many hours devoted to the cause, to create a site that best shows off your repertoire of skills to not only impress your client, but to use in your expanding portfolio. Its tough going, spending what seems like endless hours staring into an unforgiving screen in an attempt to create innovative designs that push you to your limits. Question is, is it worth it.
I believe it is..! Spending numerous hours away from my wife and children, burns at me from deep within. However, the smile of my beautiful wife when I have extra money to buy her a gift or two, or when my kids ask me to buy them a toy and their little faces light up when they get what they want. Those are the things that make it worth it for me.
Freelancers probably ask themselves why they freelance, it relentless work and sometimes for very little reward. Its a good question. Many may answer by saying: I get to work my own hours and I get to work from home.. Are these really good answers?
Motivation, is tough too, really tough. Finding solutions, resolving problems and satisfying client requests whilst selling yourself cheaper that your actual worth, just to land the job. How does one motivate themselves. My answer is above, my family, they are my fuel.
Lately, I have been working 12-15 hours days in an ongoing, successful attempt to rewrite code for big social business network. It has been tough, little sleep, long hours and little time for me, but for good financial gain.
So to answer the burning question, why do I freelance. Originally from the UK, I now live in Mexico. My Spanish skills prevent me from complex conversation, so I turned successfully to freelancing, working with Australians, British and Americans, I have been very fortunate.
Those of you who are considering freelancing, it is worth the long hours, it is worth the sacrifice. It is better than being away from your family as they are always close and the extra money makes your family smile.
Tell me, why do you freelance..?
